Your responsibilities as a referrer

As a referrer for X-ray or CT imaging under IRMER, you're legally obligated to:

  • Be a registered healthcare professional
  • Be entitled to refer under Spire procedures
  • Provide comprehensive and patient-specific clinical information to justify the radiation exposure

The role of the referrer

  • Referrers must be registered healthcare professionals and entitled to refer under Spire procedures
  • You must legally provide sufficient clinical information, specific to the patient to enable a radiology practitioner to justify the exposure to radiation

Will the imaging result impact patient management?

If not, do not refer.

Seek advice from a radiologist if uncertain, or refer to ‘i-Refer’ guidelines (contact the imaging department for access).

Essential clinical information for referrals

Before referring, ensure you have considered:

  • A clearly defined clinical question
  • Whether alternative tests/exams are more appropriate
  • If the imaging aligns with current clinical guidelines
  • Whether relevant prior imaging exists
  • If the request is clinically necessary

Required specific information

Please include your referral:

  • Specific clinical question
  • Details of previous imaging (date, findings)
  • Any other information supporting the referral
